Our mission is to provide relevant, engaging, and high-quality science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)- focused instructional materials, resources, and professional development to African teachers to support and enhance classroom instruction, thus enriching student learning and improving educational outcomes for students.
Our vision is to increase African students’ exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math by equipping their teachers with the instructional materials, resources, and training that will unlock access to endless possibilities and opportunities.
During a trip to Ghana in June of 2022, Dr. Kimberly West fell in love with the students and teachers she met and worked with. The students’ desire to learn and their teachers’ passion to provide engaging and high-quality instruction for their students was evident, yet there was minimal availability of instructional tools and resources.
Upon returning home, Dr. West founded Teach Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Africa Incorporated (Teach STEM Africa), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on supporting STEM education by providing science, technological, engineering, and mathematical instructional resources, materials, equipment, and professional development to schools and teachers across Africa.

Through our annual summer professional development series, members of the Teach STEM Africa cohort develop professional development trainings to share with African educators; members of the cohort are U.S. K-12 educators (including instructional coaches and administrators) and STEM-based professionals from a variety of fields. These hands-on and interactive STEM-focused trainings, are standards-aligned, relevant, and can easily be incorporated in classroom instruction. Best practices, such as planning effective lessons, instructional pacing, formative and summative assessment strategies, and instructional models are also shared during the professional development series.
African educators participate in the professional development series also share instructional practices with the Teach STEM Africa cohort that they can implement and use in their schools and classrooms. The summer professional development series is an exchange of educational perspectives and instructional practices, the formation of professional international relationships, and rich dialogue amongst STEM-based educators and professionals.
School visits and classroom observations allow members of the Teach STEM Africa cohort to learn more about the local education system. At the conclusion of the school visits and classroom observations, cohort members and the teachers whose classrooms they visited, meet and debrief discussing what was observed.
One of the challenges African educators face is a lack of access to instructional and technological resources to use in the classroom. During our summer professional development training series we distribute classroom supplies and materials that educators and their students can use. Supplies distributed include basic classroom supplies, such as paper, pencils, crayons, and markers.
